Ankle Foot Orthosis
The Ankle-foot orthoses (AFO) encompasses the foot, ankle and leg, finishing just below the knee. It is used in a variety of conditions that may include muscle weakness, joint instability, high muscle tone but also painful joint.
Depending on the pathology, the AFO might be used for controlling alignment, increasing mobility and independence, assisting rehabilitation, preventing deformity occurring and/or to reduce pain. AFOs may allow or not certain ankle movements, it can be fitted on either one or both legs and can be used while walking, during the night, or for a temporary period (e.g. after surgery).
Custom made from a cast, the AFO is made of high temperature thermoplastic or carbon fibre and come a wide variety of colours and patterns.
